LOA.xlsx

Learning Oriented Assessment (LOA) is a new term that puts learning at the heart of all forms of assessment.. How can assessment data be used to profile and monitor learners’ progress, informing teacher decision-making and planning and enabling students to engage in focused self-study

Based on this webinar (which most people didn't have a chance to read ahead of time but should be embedded in the summary I think) LOA.xlsx

SueAnnan 3/19/2014 12:07 Oops #ELTchat  what do you understand by LOA ?

teflgeek 3/19/2014 12:08 Hi #ELTchat.
eilymurphy 3/19/2014 12:08 Hello everybody #eltchat
Marisa_C 3/19/2014 12:08 @BobK99 hey Bob good to see you - desktop or browser tweetdeck? #ELTchat
Marisa_C 3/19/2014 12:08 Hey David -@teflgeek welcome Eily @eilymurphy #ELTchat
Ashowski 3/19/2014 12:09 @sueannan not testing them on what they should know but what they do know e.g. tests where Ss complete productive tasks #eltchat
teflgeek 3/19/2014 12:09 @Ashowski how do you determine the testing focus? #eltchat
SueAnnan 3/19/2014 12:10 @Ashowski #eltchat did you watch the video Marisa posted?
teflgeek 3/19/2014 12:10 @SueAnnan I didn't...  only just spotted the facebook post before joining in here #eltchat
MarjorieRosenbe 3/19/2014 12:11 HI #eltchat. will be lurking as I am not sure how I would implement this type of assessment.
Ashowski 3/19/2014 12:11 @teflgeek task setup has specific requirements e.g. sports vocab and past tense with YL  to write sports profile using above #eltchat
Ashowski 3/19/2014 12:11 @sueannan not yet, just seen the post now - have booked marked to watch later #eltchat
SueAnnan 3/19/2014 12:11 @teflgeek #ELTchat  it actually answers all the questions:-)
MarjorieRosenbe 3/19/2014 12:12 @SueAnnan @Ashowski Sorry, no time with getting ready for Harrogate and the usual work. #ELTchat

teflgeek 3/19/2014 12:14 @Ashowski but if you pre-determine testing focus how is it learning based?  Surely it becomes the teaching focus no? #eltchat
SueAnnan 3/19/2014 12:14 Are we more used to using formative or summative assessment? #ELTchat
teflgeek 3/19/2014 12:14 @SueAnnan can assessment be both formative and summative?  #eltchat
Ashowski 3/19/2014 12:14 @teflgeek good point. i thought LOA meant putting the learners abilities at the core of testing #eltchat
Marisa_C 3/19/2014 12:14 @teflgeek @Ashowski usual question - teach to the test ? #ELTchat
Ashowski 3/19/2014 12:15 @sueannan which one is continuous assessment? #eltchat
SueAnnan 3/19/2014 12:15 LOA is more interesting for the teacher as it can inform future ideas for tasks in class.#ELTchat
teflgeek 3/19/2014 12:15 @Marisa_C @Ashowski usual problem with assessment: presecriptive or descriptive. #eltchat
Marisa_C 3/19/2014 12:15 @Ashowski @teflgeek u are right - Ss central so syllabus perhaps less so #ELTchat
Marisa_C 3/19/2014 12:15 RT @teflgeek: @Marisa_C @Ashowski usual problem with assessment: presecriptive or descriptive. #eltchat > exactly
Ashowski 3/19/2014 12:15 @marisa_c @teflgeek my school does this - would like to see teaching learners and then testing them on what they can do #eltchat
Ashowski 3/19/2014 12:16 @marisa_c @teflgeek i.e. measure the success of the learning, not their failings #eltchat
Marisa_C 3/19/2014 12:16 I think webinar regurgitates good old Summative vs Formative assessment and how 2nd may drive the teaching #ELTchat
BobK99 3/19/2014 12:16 Haven't seen the video yet but will. LOA sounds good (rather than AOT, which is what Gove seems to want!) #eltchat
SueAnnan 3/19/2014 12:17 @teflgeek two ends of a continuum I think. Watch in class, test at end of course #eltchat
eilymurphy 3/19/2014 12:17 @Ashowski @marisa_c @teflgeek asking Ss to do sth from the 'can do' list #ELTchat
Ashowski 3/19/2014 12:17 @sueannan id say summative then #eltchat
SueAnnan 3/19/2014 12:18 Task from can do list, observe ability to do task, informs next task #ELTchat
Marisa_C 3/19/2014 12:19 @SueAnnan but some testing is involved no? #eltchat - otherwise why call it assessment and not day-to-day learning checks
teflgeek 3/19/2014 12:19 @Marisa_C @SueAnnan learner self assessment with teacher oversight maybe? #eltchat
Marisa_C 3/19/2014 12:20 This type of assessment would fall under 'progress testing' IMOH #ELTchat and would inform future lessons
teflgeek 3/19/2014 12:20 @eilymurphy @Ashowski @marisa_c has anyone looked at English Profile much yet? #eltchat
teflgeek 3/19/2014 12:21 English Profile: http://t.co/hgRbLwCDS2 #eltchat
eilymurphy 3/19/2014 12:21 @Marisa_C @SueAnnan for me it means ability to perform task , like take a phone message, not just the subskills needed to do this ? #eltchat
Marisa_C 3/19/2014 12:21 so 'summative' at end of course, nothing much else to be done, 'formative' while course going and can inform teaching #ELTchat
mary28sou 3/19/2014 12:22 #ELTchat how do you mean inform, exactly?
Ashowski 3/19/2014 12:22 @teflgeek @eilymurphy @marisa_c what's that? a book? website? #eltchat
Marisa_C 3/19/2014 12:22 @SueAnnan true - #eltchat
teflgeek 3/19/2014 12:22 @Ashowski it's a CEFR based system of describing the vocabulary and grammar learners at specific CEFR levels should know #eltchat
teflgeek 3/19/2014 12:23 @Ashowski I think....  Not actually read into it much myself yet....  #eltchat
Ashowski 3/19/2014 12:23 @teflgeekjust quickly checked it out - it looks great! #eltchat
Marisa_C 3/19/2014 12:23 @mary28sou "inform' content, activities, aims of subsequent lessons #eltchat - so not syllabus driven but learner needs driven

SueAnnan 3/19/2014 12:24 “@Marisa_C:inform' content, activities, aims of subsequent lessons #eltchat - so not syllabus driven but learner needs driven” exactly

eilymurphy 3/19/2014 12:25 @Ashowski @marisa_c true - u can adapt it to real lives of Ss #ELTchat
MarjorieRosenbe 3/19/2014 12:25 @Marisa_C @mary28sou We have to prepare all materials in advance - makes it hard to change midstream. #eltchat
NewbieCELTA 3/19/2014 12:26 RT @Ashowski: @marisa_c i really enjoy formative testing, more than summative. feel it gives a better picture plus not every1 good at tests…
eilymurphy 3/19/2014 12:26 @MarjorieRosenbe @Marisa_C @mary28sou can LOA work as informal 'off-the-cuff' assessment? #ELTchat
Marisa_C 3/19/2014 12:26 @MarjorieRosenbe @mary28sou yes but syllabuses shdn't be nailed to the floor !!! :-) surely LOA allows for some stocktaking #ELTchat
Ashowski 3/19/2014 12:27 @sueannan @marisa_c exactly, learners should be at centre of teaching not syllabi - teach what they can't, not what they should #eltchat
teflgeek 3/19/2014 12:27 A test benchmarks sts against a set of criteria - I don't see that LOA can do this.  It describes, but doesn't test.  #eltchat
Marisa_C 3/19/2014 12:27 A chance to evaluate the syllabus itself? #ELTchat
SueAnnan 3/19/2014 12:27 Is there any point in slavishly following a syllabus if students unable to do #ELTchat

BobK99 3/19/2014 12:29 RT @Ashowski: @sueannan @marisa_c ... teach what they can't, not what they should #eltchat >Sounds neat. Must think before full endorsement!
IHLondon 3/19/2014 12:30 Very interesting points being made on Learning-oriented Assessment (LOA) in today's #ELTchat
teflgeek 3/19/2014 12:30 @Ashowski the criteria comes from the syllabus.  What you want to know is whether sts have achieved the learning goals. #eltchat
SueAnnan 3/19/2014 12:30 @Ashowski we're doing a lot of demand high stuff at mo. Much more guided by pace of sts learning. #ELTchat
Marisa_C 3/19/2014 12:30 @eilymurphy I think a test to be a test has to look like a test (Face Validity) if not it's informal day-2-day assessment #ELTchat
teflgeek 3/19/2014 12:31 @Ashowski and yes - you do need it.  How else do you comunicate if you haven't acquired th tools to do so with? #eltchat

Ashowski 3/19/2014 12:32 @teflgeek syllabi often demand T  cover lots of grammar/vocab in  single course - it takes time and repetition for S to master this #eltchat
teflgeek 3/19/2014 12:32 @Ashowski I'm not expecting them to.  the syllabus should be graded to meet the level and needs of the learners #eltchat
Marisa_C 3/19/2014 12:32 @Ashowski @teflgeek Good point but this is a critique on the validity of test items in general, not formative assessment esp #ELTchat
teflgeek 3/19/2014 12:32 @Ashowski then your problem is the syllabus - not the test or assessment #eltchat
mary28sou 3/19/2014 12:33 I make running learner needs driven tests in Google Drive Forms. add items after each lesson based on Ss performance, send endmonth #ELTchat
SueAnnan 3/19/2014 12:33 @teflgeek but the teacher needs to be aware of how the students are coping with the tasks.#ELTchat
Ashowski 3/19/2014 12:34 @teflgeek I'd agree with that, problem lies more with syllabi than the tests #eltchat
teflgeek 3/19/2014 12:34 @SueAnnan they still can be no?  That's what teaching is - delivery of syllabus items and helping learners acheive syllabus goals? #eltchat
SueAnnan 3/19/2014 12:34 @mary28sou those are summative, then. #ELTchat
Ashowski 3/19/2014 12:35 So, discarding syllabi, what makes a test good? #eltchat
Marisa_C 3/19/2014 12:35 RT @SueAnnan: @mary28sou those are summative, then. #ELTchat > depends what she does with the results - give grades or amend syllabus?
