@teacherkristina hi and welcome - you certainly qualify!!! :-) #eltchat

Shaunwilden

10/02/2013 13:03

I've never taught large classes #eltchat

esolcourses

10/02/2013 12:03

@Marisa_C Joining, though not that much experience of large classes, tbh. How are we defining large? :-) #eltchat

teacherkristina

10/02/2013 18:03

@Shaunwilden How large is large? #eltchat

Marisa_C

10/02/2013 14:03

@Shaunwilden I haven't taught large classes either - can only offer tips gained from workshops with very large grps of Ts not same #eLTchat

Marisa_C

10/02/2013 14:04

@esolcourses Large is anything you feel is too large to manage I guess #eltchat

PatrickAndrews

10/02/2013 11:04

@teacherkristina @Shaunwilden I think the size of the room makes a difference #eltchat

Shaunwilden

10/02/2013 13:04

@teacherkristina To be honest no idea what the topic setter had in mind #eltchat

esolcourses

10/02/2013 12:05

RT @Marisa_C: @esolcourses Large is anything you feel is too large to manage I guess #eltchat

PatrickAndrews

10/02/2013 11:05

@teacherkristina @Shaunwilden Perhaps where the conditions are cramped is more the point than numbers #eltchat

Marisa_C

10/02/2013 14:05

@cioccas set the topic and she was interested in managing speaking activs with large (possibly unruly) grps of teens #eltchat

esolcourses

10/02/2013 12:05

RT @PatrickAndrews: @teacherkristina @Shaunwilden I think the size of the room makes a difference #eltchat yes, agree

Marisa_C

10/02/2013 14:06

@BobK99 for some 20 is a very small class -in Greece with usual No 8-10 max this sounds like a large class #eltchat

teacherkristina

10/02/2013 18:07

@Shaunwilden #eltchat my feeling of large starts at about 20, agree with roomsize matters and layout too

cioccas

10/02/2013 21:07

@Marisa_C No, not me. No unruly teens, no large groups. #ELTchat

Marisa_C

10/02/2013 14:08

@cioccas ok sorry!!!! Take it back! #eltchat

dspeicher27

10/02/2013 19:08

Hi #ELTchat in the Philippines our avg class size is 45 students

Marisa_C

10/02/2013 14:08

So what are the problems while doing speaking with large groups? #eltchat

teacherkristina

10/02/2013 18:08

#eltchat monitoring is difficult

BobK99

10/02/2013 12:09

@Marisa_C  #eltchat 20 may be an oversetimate - it was all of 5 yrs ago. As I remember there were 4 or 5 groups of 3 or 4.

teacherkristina

10/02/2013 18:09

#eltchat error correction can be too -depends on your stance towards ec, I like to correct a lot

Penultimate_K

10/02/2013 11:09

@Marisa_C Managing T-S interaction fairly. #eltchat

Marisa_C

10/02/2013 14:09

RT @teacherkristina: #eltchat monitoring is difficult > Any suggestions for that?  Can S monitors be appointed ?

esolcourses

10/02/2013 12:10

IME, roleplay works well with large groups. Choose a situation & give learners roles to act out (or get them to make up their own) #eltchat

Marisa_C

10/02/2013 14:10

RT @Penultimate_K: @Marisa_C Managing T-S interaction fairly. #eltchat > true diff to be fair in dstributing talk

teacherkristina

10/02/2013 18:11

@Marisa_C #eltchat monitoring works well, needs  modelling

Marisa_C

10/02/2013 14:11

RT @teacherkristina: @Marisa_C S monitors works well after modelling > perhaps if they had a checklist of what to focus on? #eltchat

teacherkristina

10/02/2013 18:11

#eltchat yep, I've given them language points to focus on, 1 or 2 usually

dspeicher27

10/02/2013 19:12

MT @esolcourses: IME, roleplay works well with large groups...agreed ever try readers theater?  #eltchat

Shaunwilden

10/02/2013 13:12

Isn't dealing with feedback one of the biggest issues  #eltchat

jobethsteel

10/02/2013 11:13

#eltchat Had up to 23 at uni. can't monitor every activity. tell sts this.  Do 1 group then another.  Lots of peer corretion.

Marisa_C

10/02/2013 14:13

@BrunoELT  hello Brazil! #eltchat

Marisa_C

MrChrisJWilson

10/02/2013 14:13

Hello #eltchat nice to see you all again.

esolcourses

10/02/2013 12:13

@dspeicher27 can't say I have, though I've worked with learners to devise their own scripts once or twice #eltchat

dspeicher27

10/02/2013 19:15

@esolcourses yah it's kinda like that...it's great for speaking tasks and reading fluency..no memorization #ELTchat

Penultimate_K

10/02/2013 11:15

@Shaunwilden It can be. But it helps of you deal with most pressing & common concerns first, then schedule the rest for post-class. #eltchat

teacherkristina

10/02/2013 18:15

@esolcourses #eltchat how do you handle timing of rp when 1 group finishes way ahead of the others?

Marisa_C

10/02/2013 14:15

@Shaunwilden RT @Shaunwilden: Isn't dealing with feedback one of the biggest issues  #eltchat >  can be - Any suggestions?

Shaunwilden

10/02/2013 13:15

@Penultimate_K Post class?  #eltchat

esolcourses

10/02/2013 12:16

@teacherkristina I tend to take a more unplugged approach, i.e. in theory, they should either be taking part or watching the others #eltchat

Marisa_C

10/02/2013 14:16

@teacherkristina @esolcourses usually ask  them to snoop over what other grps are doing :-) spy on them #eltchat to compare ideas

louisealix68

10/02/2013 13:16

@jobethsteel @Marisa_C have 35 16 -18 yr olds in my class. Have become very creative #eltchat

BobK99

10/02/2013 12:16

MT @jobethsteel #eltchat ... Lots of peer corretion > Yes, needs must, but PC can favour the loudest. As a S, I found this galling.

Penultimate_K

10/02/2013 11:17

@Shaunwilden Yes. Those 10 or so minutes after class has been dismissed or if you take appts to talk to SS outside of class. #eltchat

Marisa_C

10/02/2013 14:17

@teacherkristina @esolcourses Send out a spy to diff groups #eltchat

teacherkristina

10/02/2013 18:17

@Marisa_C @esolcourses #eltchat I like the spying :)

louisealix68

10/02/2013 13:17

#eltchat am reading on way to uni in bus. iPhone not great for joining in

Marisa_C

10/02/2013 14:17

@louisealix68 @jobethsteel would love to hear your ideas abt dealing with probs #eltchat

MrChrisJWilson

10/02/2013 14:17

I guess even in "larger" classes you don't want to have the same answer again and again taking up time from the next activity. #eltchat

louisealix68

10/02/2013 13:18

#eltchat peer feedback using soundcloud. Teacher checks at random

Marisa_C

10/02/2013 14:18

@teacherkristina :-) #eltchat do it with my trainees too - they love it

esolcourses

10/02/2013 12:18

@teacherkristina example scenario: an incident - some s's are involved, others witnesses, passers by, police taking statements, etc #eltchat

Marisa_C

10/02/2013 14:19

@louisealix68 may be voxopop or sth like that - what tool ? voicethread? #eltchat

louisealix68

10/02/2013 13:19

@Marisa_C @jobethsteel #eltchat mostly involves small groups and clear division if roles. Eg "expert" groups

teacherkristina

10/02/2013 18:20

@esolcourses #eltchat and it works for all levels!

Penultimate_K

10/02/2013 11:20

@louisealix68 Also real-time feedback from T or classmates using Audionote (if focus is speaking) #eltchat

MrChrisJWilson

10/02/2013 14:20

I remember one I heard called "goldfish bowl" where you have observers round the edge observing (confident?) sts #eltchat

BobK99

10/02/2013 12:20

MT @teacherkristina @Marisa_C @esolcourses ... #eltchat I like the spying :) >  Good idea. It becomes a sort of 'prize'.

louisealix68

10/02/2013 13:20

@Marisa_C I like soundcloud best #eltchat

Marisa_C

10/02/2013 14:20

@BrunoELT absolutely right - careful prep and guidance crucial (for all grps to be honest not just large classes) #eltchat

Shaunwilden

10/02/2013 13:20

@louisealix68 @Marisa_C Soundcloud is good cos you can leave feedback  within the recording  #eltchat

jobethsteel

10/02/2013 11:20

@BrunoELT agree #eltchat

MrChrisJWilson

10/02/2013 14:21

@BrunoELT No i mean if you have 10 groups and you ask the answer from every group you have a long time of 9 groups not speaking #eltchat

Marisa_C

10/02/2013 14:21

@MrChrisJWilson Sounds very much like what you do in Silent Way - Ss work in 'waves' inner vs outer circle #eltchat

louisealix68

10/02/2013 13:21

Bus arriving. Got to go. Will read more when lift hits 20th floor #eltchat

esolcourses

10/02/2013 12:21

@teacherkristina generally, yes - though sometimes shyer students may need to be coaxed a bit :-) #eltchat

MrChrisJWilson

10/02/2013 14:21

@BrunoELT Maybe it's better to get feedback from only 5 groups this time and 5 groups from the next activity #eltchat

Marisa_C

10/02/2013 14:22

@MrChrisJWilson one on the web with Donald Freeman #eltchat will find

Marisa_C

10/02/2013 14:23

@BrunoELT @louisealix68 me neither #eltchat not for this anyways just to upload sounds

MrChrisJWilson

10/02/2013 14:24

@BrunoELT I think you just added to it! I was only at half a thought there #eltchat

Marisa_C

10/02/2013 14:24

I think so far we have all agreed that you really need thorough prepping and strong class management re ICQs etc as a start point #eltchat

Shaunwilden

10/02/2013 13:25

RT @Marisa_C: I think so far we have all agreed that you really need thorough prepping and strong class management re ICQs etc as a start p…

Marisa_C

10/02/2013 14:26

I havent tried this one - but couldnt the T take aside a small team of monitors who circulate and note down stuff? #eltchat

Shaunwilden

10/02/2013 13:27

@BrunoELT @louisealix68 @Marisa_C I think @theteacherjames blogged about using sound cloud  #eltchat

Marisa_C

10/02/2013 14:27

T can brief them - it doesn't actually matter what they note down - there's value in whatever is shown at end #eltchat

Marisa_C

10/02/2013 14:27

@Shaunwilden thanks :-) #eltchat

jobethsteel

10/02/2013 11:28

#eltchat main prob for me is space provided and echo in lecture rooms - can't hear anything! No solution for this. Managing spking not prob

teacherkristina

10/02/2013 18:28

@Marisa_C #eltchat sounds good!

Marisa_C

10/02/2013 14:28

RT @voigto: @Marisa_C 26 in y10, 31 in y5, 23 y11/12. Normal class size in German secondary schools #eltchat

MrChrisJWilson

10/02/2013 14:28

I would imagine drama and role play would be better with larger classes. Shy students feel less watched/listened to? #eltchat

MrChrisJWilson

10/02/2013 14:29

@jobethsteel I would imagine getting round a lecture room would be more difficult too! #eltchat

esolcourses

10/02/2013 12:29

RT @MrChrisJWilson imagine drama & role play would be better with larger classes. Shy students feel less watched/listened to? #eltchat agree

jobethsteel

10/02/2013 11:29

@MrChrisJWilson #eltchat Horrid!

Penultimate_K

10/02/2013 11:29

@Marisa_C You have to be careful with this. The monitors will have to perceive the learning benefit for themselves if it's to work. #eltchat

BobK99

10/02/2013 12:29

RT @BobK99 @Marisa_C Again, make that a prize - first to finish this exercise get to monitor the next. #eltchat

Marisa_C

10/02/2013 14:30

Some lessons which include learner training abt how u work, how to collaborate, what good learners do etc might be good #eltchat

jobethsteel

10/02/2013 11:30

@BobK99 @Marisa_C #eltchat or extent tasks, set time limits, allow time outs.

Marisa_C

10/02/2013 14:31

@Penultimate_K roles can change - you could have a ready set of role cards - secretary - monitor - liaison officer - artist etc #eltchat

jobethsteel

10/02/2013 11:32

@Marisa_C #eltchat yes re learner training and how tasks similar to real life - waiting for others to finish etc ...

Penultimate_K

10/02/2013 11:32

@Marisa_C A lot of work & you'd need to explain the benefit of each role before commencing. #eltchat

Marisa_C

10/02/2013 14:32

@jobethsteel Learn more about teaching mixed ability classes #eltchat - have some stuff up your sleeve yes

While there's a lot of good advise here, is this relevant to all classes rather than large classes per se?  #eltchat

Marisa_C

@Penultimate_K that should be part of your learner training stretch not every lesson methinks #eltchat

BobK99

MT @Shaunwilden ... is this relevant to all classes rather than large classes per se?  #eltchat > Bound to be, as def of 'large' is fuzzy

Penultimate_K

10/02/2013 11:35

@Marisa_C Which assumes that the opportunity is there to include learner training. What if you have rolling enrolment/set intakes? #eltchat

Marisa_C

10/02/2013 14:35

Looks like while planning the activity you need some options and alternatives for early finishers, slow Ss, etc? #eltchat

louisealix68

10/02/2013 13:35

ok I'm back. Am trying to read to see what I've missed. #eltchat (incidentally the view from up here is great!)

Marisa_C

10/02/2013 14:36

@Penultimate_K I don't really know about that - may this can be part of a wiki or sth? how often? #eltchat

jobethsteel

10/02/2013 11:36

@Penultimate_K @Marisa_C  #eltchat Deal with it on your platform and keep banging on about it.

teacherkristina

10/02/2013 18:37

@Marisa_C #eltchat yes - the larger the class, the more mixed abilities, generally - more options necessary

@louisealix68 great idea but we are focusing on speaking actitities today :-) #eltchat

jobethsteel

10/02/2013 11:43

@Marisa_C Trouble for me with phone recordings is the background noise and quality of sts' phones. #eltchat can work  depends on room.

Shaunwilden

10/02/2013 13:44

@jobethsteel @Marisa_C While i take the point I think they work enough to help analyse how well the task went  #eltchat

jobethsteel

10/02/2013 11:48

@Shaunwilden @Marisa_C #eltchat when background noise means I can't understand sts, get them to repeat at home and then I assess

Marisa_C

10/02/2013 14:48

@Tom_IHBCN  Positive rewards rather than grades? E.g. for best participation - longest list of ideas - fewest errors etc? #eltchat

jobethsteel

10/02/2013 11:49

@Marisa_C @Tom_IHBCN #eltchat Always positive, yes.

Marisa_C

10/02/2013 14:50

May be change attitude and see class speaking as a rehearsal - then groups go on the soundcloud for the performance!!! #eltchat

Shaunwilden

10/02/2013 13:51

@Marisa_C Class as rehearsal would seem like a good use of class time #eltchat
