Thanks for a great #eltchat everyone - no failure here!
-
-
-
-
-
Goodness. It's that time already :-) #ELTchat
-
-
-
-
@Shaunwilden #eltchat so on teacher training courses,gd to train how to reflect w/framework but shd also encourage discovering own best way
-
Are we going to fail to find a summary writer? #eltchat
-
But we have to learn awareness first #ELTchat
-
-
-
-
-
@theteacherjames exactly - our courses are 6 weeks and then we have totally new Ss, so the end of every 6 weeks makes sense for me #eltchat
-
-
I think mistakes keep us on our toes, so we don't become complacent #ELTchat
-
-
-
-
Wait a minute I want to share a good book for reflective teaching #eltchat
-
Can't cope with this new tweetdeck!! slow and weird! help? #eltchat
-
@SueAnnan but not everyone likes doing it each week, i think it goes back to the 'public' reflection that @Marisa_C was talking abt #eltchat
-
Content from Twitter
-
@SueAnnan could be good to set a regular time that you sit down and formally reflect (pen to paper) e.g end of the week or month #eltchat
-
-
-
Just finished a course online which included weekly reflection. Was a good tool IMO #ELTchat
-
@ColinTGraham yeah!!! I won't say we missed you - haven't forgotten you comments abt the drinks!! #ELtchat
-
-
-
OK, I am out of here for tonight! Thanks for chatting tweeps, it's been a long time since I did an #ELTchat!
-
-
-
@Marisa_C I think you need to find two or three outlets which allow you to reflect on your teaching, rather than "this is the way" #ELTchat
-
-
-
@Marisa_C I think it's down to personal preferences. I've tried journalling/blogging etc during my MSc but it wasn't helpful for me #ELTchat
-
-
#eltchat ... So often failure to do something in one eay helps you to find out new ways to do the same thing. Anyway, thnx for chat all :-)
-
@Shaunwilden threatened to confess failures publicly - look at what happened at IATEFL - fun but hardly informative! #ELTchat
-
@Marisa_C That's the reason I started blogging, & one of the reasons I continue. #eltchat
-
-
#eltchat sorry everyone, my Internet connection very slow tonight. Is this an example of failure? No coz I cn read summary later :-)
-
-
@shaznosel You misunderstand me - it's wrong to measure yourself against the idea of an idealised, model teacher in your mind. #eltchat
-
So - a reflective blog? - can be private mostly - until you are ready to share your learning with others #eltchat or do Ts feel threatened
-
dare I ask if we can discuss the point about ELF/EIL..it's a topic close to my heart and I agree with the blog 100% ?? #eltchat
-
@KatySDavies If you go through your teaching career blithely thinking that everything you do is "OK", then that is the big fail! #ELTchat
-
@ColinTGraham totally agree - and which is why reflection needs to be about more than thinking back beyond just your last lesson #eltchat
-
-
-
-
-
@KatySDavies Realising that you made a mistake is a step though. Not realising that you made a mistake is maybe about experience? #ELTchat
-
-
-
@shaunwilden I suppose that's inevitable, to an extent, if you work for an organisation with expectations #ELTChat
-
-
-
-
-
-
2/2 … but if you get to the end and realise you didn't spot those mistakes or learn from them = failure? #eltchat
-
-
@ColinTGraham maybe that's the diff between mistakes and failure though - mistakes at the beginning… 1/2 #eltchat
-
@Marisa_C ta, i lost focus for a minute, yes you're right but isn't the build up of expectations caused by a trainer? #eltchat
-
@theteacherjames It's always a good idea to remember that the learners are just as apprehensive as you are in those situations. #ELTchat
-
#eltchat I mean focusing on how well we did may take our attention off of the lesson, or learning itself. Just curious..
-
As Katy mentioned in her blog-failure is not what we think we did/n't do..it's if we did/n't do it for our Ls..did we fail them? #eltchat
-
@KatySDavies Yes, and it takes confidence to accept that, which probably takes time to come. #eltchat
-
-
-
-
@ColinTGraham Absolutely, I'm going through that now and I choose to see it as a great learning opportunity. #eltchat
-
@Marisa_C I always have a drink lined up before taking part in/moderating Twitter chats, Marisa! ;-) #ELTchat
-
#eltchat who determines wht is successful learning. I remember thinking I was teaching Eng Ish but stds learned to use Dropbox. CLIL??
-
-
-
I need a drink - all this self torture is bringing back all my past failures - like a DIckensian nightmare #Eltchat
-
@SueAnnan Cn all Ss learn 2 the same extent in a L?or a number of them?still, isn't this sth we expect &try to compensate next time? #eltchat
-
New situations always seem to be the 'breeding ground' for a sense of failure - start of course, new text, etc. #ELTchat
-
-
@Marisa_C I think one of the healthiest things we can do is abandon the idealised teacher & learn to be ourselves. #eltchat
-
I think we have to accept that like Ss we have our own learning curve - so reflection fits our internal learning rhythm #ELtchat
-
-
-
-
@Marisa_C Colour the nouns red, the verbs green, etc... "What did you learn today?" "Colouring"... seen that happen! #ELTchat
-
@LizziePinard definitely! It's like the rabbit hole in Alice in Wonderland… every question you answer seems to open up ten more #eltchat
-
-
-
@theteacherjames totally agree - I think that's what I meant about bigger picture, because it can take time for ideas to crystelise #eltchat
-
-
What role do observers play, in that they may notice "mistakes" that you totally miss? #ELTchat
-
@ColinTGraham in ELT it's hard to know if no learning at all took place - maybe OTHER learning happened - has to do with US more #Eltchat
-
-
@Marisa_C #eltchat Hello everyone, good talk happening! Q: does reflection have to be just abt T? Can it be more holistic?
-
I guess we all weren't taking about being perfect, but about making mistakes... more than that... about how they reinforce learning #eltchat
-
@Marisa_C I think the image of this idealised teacher keeps changing as we get more experienced, so you're never really satisfied #eltchat
-
-
-
if students are learning- what is failure? #ELTchat
-
-
Self-assessment goes wrong if you don't accept that you can't control everything and maybe need to focus on one or two things only #ELTchat
-
@SueAnnan true though I think trainees try and preempt the what went wrong and forget thus forget the positives #eltchat
-
Does the word 'failure' stem from some kind of idealized teacher model we carry in our head? #ELtchat
-
Anyone fail with a group for whole semester? Happened 3 years ago but group was problem for all at college. #eltchat
-
@joannacre "failure" is maybe not setting yourself some kind of measurement of "successes" (more than 1) before you go do a lesson #ELTchat
-
-
@hartle good idea both valuable - hot off the press and given a bit more time #Eltchat
-
-
-
@Marisa_C #eltchat on our CELTA we did "hot" reflection straight after TP and then cold reflection at home later.
-
-
@Marisa_C For me the reflection was the best part of the course, but I felt the others were, as you say, self flagellating. #eltchat
-
-
-
-
Other things going wrong include forgetting materials, games etc for class. #eltchat
-
-
-
@SueAnnan Not if it's out of proportion. If you learned eliciting this morning, you probably won't be good at it this afternoon! #eltchat
-
@theteacherjames Yes, structured reflection is sth we encourage and reward - more important than learning a technique or five #ELTchat
-
When you stop making mistakes, you stop learning #eltchat
-
-
I would be worried if I came out of a lesson without having something I wanted to change or improve - everything OK? = fail for me #ELTchat
-
#eltchat often we remember the emotive reaction to a situation tht went wrong, & have to distance ourselves bfr we can identify problem ..
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
#eltchat @Marisa_C i'll note down 3 best/3 worst after ea. lesson then do reflective blog posts on it every so often, see if patterns emerge
-
@face_english but I think failures can often be the things we don't do rather than the things we do do, if you see what I mean #eltchat
-
-
@Marisa_C I do think that we need to accept though that sometimes things go wrong due to factors beyond our control... #eltchat
-
-
most memorable learning experiences come from 'mistakes' #eltchat
-
-
@Marisa_C #eltchat I'm going to start doing that! reviewed a reflective journal for Etp so its waiting to be written in! project for summer!
-
@Marisa_C I record really successful lessons and howlers & analyse them in depth, to try and pin down what worked and what didn't #eltchat
-
-
-
@Marisa_C I'd say a personal checklist would work brilliantly as every teacher has his/her own weaknesses and strengths. #eltchat
-
@Marisa_C I think we remember better what we do wrong than what we do right. #eltchat
-
@shaznosel i fully take the point have just always tried to do what I feel is best for sts regardless of rules #eltchat
-
-
@Marisa_C #eltchat or note down 3 things that went best and 3 things that went worst or similar - something simple ?
-
@Marisa_C #eltchat not sure about "structured" could become too rigid: each teacher can find their own way. Important thing is to do it
-
To make it less elaborate could a T use say a column next to some lesson notes? #ELtchat
-
-
Once tried to explain future tense using examples in course book and ended up confusing sts and me. Never did that again. #eltchat
-
#eltchat Failure could be a new starting point. We cannot always control what stands outside us
-
-
-
@Marisa_C If it'snot recorded,we might be focusing on the wrong things / not remember exaclty how things unraveled #ELTChat
-
-
@Shaunwilden Initially it's about creating a learning environment where it's ok to be wrong. Then, setting challenging tasks #ELTchat
-
-
-
@Marisa_C I think reflection shld be recorded,to be revisited and looked into - more proof there on what happened #ELTChat
-
Should reflection be structured? E.g. should we have a checklist of some kind? Who makes the checklist? #eltchat
-
-
@ColinTGraham how do you encourage error making? I do agree we learn from mistakes but I wouldn't necessarily encourage #eltchat
-
-
#eltchat often the "failure" to do an activity as "planned" can lead to fascinating new adaptations of materials etc.
-
-
Do you think that reflection on what worked didn't work should be somehow recorded? If not, does it work the same? #eltchat
-
-
some mistakes are only a question of experience #ELTchat
-
-
-
-
-
-
In my maths teaching, I like to encourage error-making, because they become learning/teaching opportunities. #ELTchat
-
#eltchat depends a lot on wht we mean by failure, in fact. Failure to interact with stds, for example, to plan, to manage classrooms etc.
-
I'm always telling my sts it's okay to make mistakes, it's how they learn. It'd be a bit strange if I didn't say the same to myself #eltchat
-
-
-
@KatySDavies I am not sure I would associate failure with beliefs - makes me feel like a doctrine must be followed or else #eltchat
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
@Alwayscharlie Depends on the kind of mistakes, but I should make some, or else there's something fishy going on! #eltchat
-
-
-
#eltchat "perfection" means "finished" so if you are perfect ther's nothing left to learn and nowhere else to go. Failure leads 2 learning
-
-
@Alwayscharlie A zillion mistakes, as far as we try not to repeat the same mistakes a session after is fine IMO! #eltchat
-
@ColinTGraham sometimes feel like that as well. Having a lesson that goes to plan doesn't necessarily mean that much is learnt! #eltchat
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
Hi, everyone!!Nice to see you all! #eltchat
-
I often learn from watching other people's lessons unravelling #ELTchat
-
The question is, how many mistakes are we allowed to make per class? #eltchat
-
-
@esolcourses definitely - I think that's why the worst failures are the ones where you haven't reflected #eltchat
-
@Marisa_C but we have assumptions and solutions before doing a lesson, right? plan B, C, D...?? #eltchat
-
-
-
-
-
#eltchat I often feel my set up is rushed, or that I presume my students know where I'm going with an activity, even the ones I know well!!
-
-
-
Well, we could begin by a feeling of dissatisfaction with a lesson or an activity #ELtchat even without preset criteria, shouldn't we ask Qs?
-
I worry more about the lessons I thought were successful, because I'm not always sure the students learned what was intended #ELTchat
-
-
@KatySDavies exactly, to be honest I haven't had such an experience- lack of learning. What do we mean then? #eltchat
-
-
The concept of "failure" depends on the criteria you set for success, so maybe it's about that to begin with. #ELTchat
-
-
-
@VincentOConnor_ Good comment - but our #ELTchat is not about their perceptions - it's about our perceptions and reflections rather
-
-
-
-
Sometimes what WE think are failures, our students love, and learn from, while what we think will rock, sometimes bomb!! #eltchat
-
-
-
-
-
-
Hi #eltchat going to be popping in and out this evening! ;-) My first question is "Whose mistakes - learner's or teacher's?"
-
@haniehak and if it's your failure as a teacher, then what you've done wrong or not done which has led to the lack of learning #eltchat
-
-
-
-
-
-
I don't know about 'failures' but every lesson is a learning curve #ELTchat
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
@Marisa_C I really should be busy writing my dissertation rather than writing about my dissertation, buy hey ho! #eltchat
