hartle 12:02 PM Hi everyone #ELTChat
cioccas 12:02 PM @Marisa_C Thanks Marisa, good to be back on #ELTchat
kevchanwow 12:02 PM Hi all.  So nice to be able to talk about extended reading...woops.  Did it again.  #ELTchat.
CELT_Athens 12:02 PM RT @Marisa_C: Some pre-reading before #ELTchat  http://t.co/E9C7tavY  & a nice collection for later http://t.co/iYpr7m1E
Shaunwilden 12:02 PM @cioccas Wow long time no see :-) #ELTchat
cioccas 12:03 PM RT @kevchanwow: Will be spending my next 60 minutes in #ELTchat talking about extensive reading.  Join us.
Marisa_C 12:03 PM @worldteacher What level is it and what have been some of your choices Andrea?  #eltchat
Shaunwilden 12:03 PM @kevchanwow @Marisa_C So is there actually any difference between extended reading and extensive reading ;-) #ELTchat
Marisa_C 12:03 PM @hartle HI Sharon! Welcome  #ELTChat
worldteacher 12:03 PM Really interested in this topic - trying to implement an extensive reading programme on the course I'm currently coordinating. #eltchat
Shaunwilden 12:04 PM @cioccas Nice to have you back :-) #ELTchat
worldteacher 12:04 PM @Marisa_C Tall order - pre-int to upper-int in 16 weeks!! Started Monday. Looking at graded readers. #eltchat
cioccas 12:04 PM @hartle Hi Sharon :-) #ELTchat
Marisa_C 12:04 PM @elawassell hya #ELTchat #ELTchat
worldteacher 12:05 PM @hartle Trying graded readers on our Edmodo online classroom, one chapter each day in this 1st week of the course. #eltchat
hartle 12:05 PM RT @cioccas: @hartle Hi Sharon :-) #ELTchat. Hi Lesley :-)
Shaunwilden 12:05 PM @worldteacher @Marisa_C  Wow that is a tall order - gonna be an intensive extensive program then! #ELTchat
Marisa_C 12:05 PM @worldteacher Graded readers a good choice when launching a reading programme like this - Ss choice or Class Reader? #eltchat
hartle 12:05 PM RT @worldteacher: Really interested in this topic - trying to implement an extensive reading programme...#eltchat How RU doing it?
worldteacher 12:06 PM @Marisa_C Started with a class reader - then hope sts will choose their own. #eltchat
harrisonmike 12:07 PM @Marisa_C @worldteacher is it extensive reading? #eltchat
Marisa_C 12:07 PM RT @worldteacher: @Marisa_C Started with a class reader - then hope sts will choose their own. #eltchat > Gd idea to intro them to ER
daveclearycz 12:07 PM Agree graded readers are great  but other material can be hard to source  #eltchat
worldteacher 12:07 PM RT @Shaunwilden: @worldteacher @Marisa_C  Wow that is a tall order - gonna be an intensive extensive program then! #ELTchat >Definitely!
hartle 12:07 PM #eltchat i've used class lobraries etc. In the past with varying success
Shaunwilden 12:08 PM @kevchanwow Yes cost is a factor when setting up a graded reader library though as an investment it can be used long term #ELTchat
hartle 12:08 PM RT @worldteacher: #eltchat great idea! are they blended learners, then? What level are they? Cn I see yr class?
daveclearycz 12:08 PM RT @daveclearycz:  sorrz meant to say: Agree graded readers are great  but other material  is too but can be hard to source  #eltchat
ljp2010 12:08 PM #ELTchat Morning all.  Bit late but good t 2 c u all.  Will try to catch up...
worldteacher 12:08 PM @harrisonmike Yes! #eltchat
Marisa_C 12:08 PM @harrisonmike yes  #eltchat
worldteacher 12:09 PM @hartle Absolutely, Sharon - would love your input! Intend to write up the 1st week at the w/end. #eltchat
harrisonmike 12:09 PM #eltchat for those in the UK, http://t.co/XgPKdziJ is a fairly accessible (readable) newspaper. Good for topical extensive reading?
kevchanwow 12:09 PM If you organize the materials by level, extended readers make that easy.  It's fitting in the sup. stuff that gets messy.
reasons4 12:09 PM “@elawassell: The avantage of a class reader is...#ELTchat” > and the disadvantage if finding something that suits the whole class.
ljp2010 12:10 PM #ELTchat  We have a set reader for each level per term and a small school library.  We also have level blogs with links to articles, etc.
cioccas 12:10 PM I'm not that organised. I just talk to individual Ss about fav books that I think they'd be interested in & able to manage. #ELTchat
Shaunwilden 12:10 PM @reasons4 Yes good point tricky balance - the one set or many #ELTchat
Shaunwilden 12:11 PM @harrisonmike @kevchanwow  Jez's blog is dedicated to reading isnt it - http://t.co/pMuzHKo7 might be a useful source of ideas  #eltchat
ljp2010 12:11 PM #ELTchat Anyone had success with sts choosing own reader?  Swap programmes?
hartle 12:11 PM @worldteacher great Andrea, it's smthng I'm really interested in but find it hard to motivate my stds :-(( eltchat Can U give me link to it?
worldteacher 12:11 PM @cioccas Do you find that many of your sts choose to read in English without being 'forced'? #eltchat
reasons4 12:11 PM ‚Äú@harrisonmike: #eltchat but awfully right wing and opinionated  need to make sure you do some critical thinking exercises
hartle 12:12 PM #eltchat gave stds chiice btwn Reading or Listening projects. Most chose listening but some takers 4 reading.
Shaunwilden 12:12 PM @ljp2010 Am not sure what qualifies as success but at my last school we had a fairly active library running out of the SAC  #eltchat
cioccas 12:12 PM @worldteacher #eltchat < Only the ones that like reading in their L1
reasons4 12:12 PM @worldteacher: @cioccas Do u find that many of your sts choose to read w/out being 'forced'? #eltchat i think that depents on giving choice
Marisa_C 12:12 PM RT @Shaunwilden: Jez's blog is dedicated to reading isnt it - http://t.co/VsATQ6cq might be a useful source of ideas  #eltchat
harrisonmike 12:12 PM #eltchat @jezuden's efl reading in cares blog http://t.co/njg254WB #extensivereading interviews w/ @harmerj and @sueleather
kevchanwow 12:12 PM @harrisonmike @Shaunwilden @jezuden That is a great idea.We got a starter set of about 200 books, but that's not enough I'm afraid. #ELTchat
worldteacher 12:12 PM @ljp2010 Sounds great! #eltchat
harrisonmike 12:13 PM #eltchat @jezuden's @bcseminars on the importance of reading for pleasure http://t.co/2qabHZnj #extensivereading
worldteacher 12:13 PM @cioccas As I thought! Do you try to persuade the others or is it entirely voluntary? #eltchat
Marisa_C 12:13 PM A class library or even a library BOX if no library available is a great idea - I take one from class to class #ELTchat
cioccas 12:13 PM @reasons4 @worldteacher I don't force, just encourage - reading for pleasure! #ELTchat
ljp2010 12:13 PM #ELTchat @worldteacher  Yes, some sts really take advantage of it.  But how to reach those that may not have a love of reading in general?
harrisonmike 12:13 PM @reasons4 good point! #eltchat
kevchanwow 12:14 PM I had a student read her first book in any language 2 months ago. She's an avid reader now. For her it was all about confidence. #ELTchat
worldteacher 12:14 PM @ljp2010 I don't know! That's my dilemma because I really believe in the benefit or extensive reading! #eltchat
cioccas 12:14 PM @worldteacher Entirely voluntary! #ELTchat
hartle 12:14 PM RT @Shaunwilden: @harrisonmike @kevchanwow  Jez's blog is dedicated to reading isnt it - http://t.co/pMuzHKo7 might be a useful source of ideas  #eltchat
ljp2010 12:14 PM @Shaunwilden I've added some collections of stories to ours but not the library per se.  Worth some thought.  #ELTchat
cioccas 12:15 PM RT @kevchanwow: I had a student read her first book in any language 2 months ago.... #ELTchat <Great story!
harrisonmike 12:15 PM #eltchat I set up a colleague to run a 'reading' class i.e. sts read their graded readers, then discuss and do lang/skills work 1/2
Shaunwilden 12:15 PM RT @harrisonmike: #eltchat @bcseminars on the importance of reading for pleasure http://t.co/T8l6pVkD #extensivereading
Books4English 12:15 PM best low lvl reader is Penguin K's 1st case by L.G. Alexander - a whodunnit with suspect interviews good extended class reading +k7 #eltchat
reasons4 12:15 PM “@cioccas: @reasons4 @worldteacher I don't force, just encourage - reading for pleasure! #ELTchat” exactly :-)
worldteacher 12:15 PM @cioccas Probably best! :-) I do get a bit evangelical about the value of extensive reading, though! #eltchat
ljp2010 12:15 PM @kevchanwow Yes, getting the right level to start reading is so important.  #ELTchat
cybraryman1 12:15 PM My Classroom Libraries page: http://t.co/wfTgBjsk #eltchat
Marisa_C 12:15 PM Voluntary is good but some incentive, esp for YL's or teens useful - a chart with prizes etc #ELTchat publishers used to produce them
reasons4 12:15 PM ‚Äú@ljp2010: #ELTchat @worldteacher  how to reach those that may not have a love of reading in general?‚Äù Um don't we can't flog a dead horse
daveclearycz 12:15 PM So how do you convince reluctant sts to ty even graded readers? #eltchat
cioccas 12:15 PM @Marisa_C I have a set of Roald Dahl books that Ss can borrow - not graded but includes 'young readers' to older ones  Also CDs #ELTchat
worldteacher 12:16 PM @kevchanwow Great! #eltchat
Marisa_C 12:16 PM @cioccas do you think ss should be able to HEAR the stories as well as read? doesn't that defeat the purpose of reading?  #ELTchat
ljp2010 12:16 PM #ELTchat
harrisonmike 12:16 PM #eltchat 2/2 she was initially sceptical, but said it really worked well, although the sts that got the most were prob good readers in L1
ljp2010 12:16 PM @worldteacher  My best guess is thru engaging pre & post reading tasks.  I'm sure we'll get to practical ideas 4 those later  #ELTchat
hartle 12:16 PM #eltchat motivation key, stds need clear tasks & goals, mine gave group presentations of the best things they'd read, some answer in exams
ljp2010 12:17 PM Anyone tried a sustained silent reading prog in class time e.g. 15 minutes where sts JUST read whatever they want?  #ELTchat
Marisa_C 12:17 PM @kevchanwow Good point  #ELTchat
Shaunwilden 12:17 PM @Marisa_C I think they still do, I know OUP has stuff on their website for teachers http://t.co/ZN1AAdMp #ELTchat
kevchanwow 12:17 PM And if you don't set aside time specifically for reading, will students really get the message that reading is important?  #ELTchat
kevchanwow 12:18 PM @cioccas She started at level 1/400 headwords and is now reading level 3 (1000 headwords) all in 3 months. Extensive reading works. #ELTchat
reasons4 12:18 PM ‚Äú@Marisa_C: @cioccas doesn't that defeat the purpose of reading?  #ELTchat‚Äù > different strokes  isn't it the exposure to eng that is imp?
Shaunwilden 12:18 PM @ljp2010 No, have you, did it work? #ELTchat
cioccas 12:18 PM @Marisa_C Not necessarily, but it gets some into reading and helps those with lower literacy manage harder texts #ELTchat
Marisa_C 12:18 PM RT @ljp2010: Anyone tried a sustained silent reading prog in class time e.g. 15 minutes where sts JUST read whatever they want?  #ELTchat
harrisonmike 12:18 PM @Marisa_C @cioccas #eltchat surely they should hear or visualise internally. CDs that come w/readers good for backing up the reading
Shaunwilden 12:19 PM @kevchanwow Yes but then if we force them to read in that time are we likely to demotivate them? #ELTchat
worldteacher 12:19 PM Does anyone have any experience of setting up a book club for EFL learners? #eltchat
ljp2010 12:19 PM @Shaunwilden Not yet!  1 teacher did here and had good results.  From admin viewpoint, it's how to sell it to the sts and parents  #ELTchat
Marisa_C 12:19 PM @harrisonmike @cioccas  #eltchat Am not convinced of this myself - turns Ss into slow voice-dependent readers  #ELTchat
reasons4 12:20 PM ‚Äú@Marisa_C: RT @ljp2010: Anyone tried a sustained silent reading prog in class time   #ELTchat‚Äù if my czech teacher did that I'd complain
hartle 12:20 PM RT @Marisa_C: @harrisonmike @cioccas  #eltchat Am not convinced of this myself... #ELTchat depends on text, ghost stories with effects gd
kevchanwow 12:20 PM @ljp2010 We are going to do a 2 hour a week silent reading program with 1 hour a week of voluntary conversation class on readings. #ELTchat
MrChrisJWilson 12:20 PM #eltchat any thoughts about encouraging dyslexic sts with reading? My thought read + listen at the same time.
Shaunwilden 12:20 PM RT @worldteacher: Does anyone have any experience of setting up a book club for EFL learners? #eltchat
Shaunwilden 12:21 PM @ljp2010 @reasons4 I think class time should be used to encourage but not necessarily do the actual reading #ELTchat
Marisa_C 12:21 PM @harrisonmike I think reading and then listening - not vice versa #eltchat
ljp2010 12:21 PM @reasons4 Exactly!  We know reading is important but it isn't seen as valuable use of class time  #ELTchat
Shaunwilden 12:21 PM @kevchanwow Personally I'd hate that if I were a students - I can read at home, class is for talking :-) #ELTchat
harrisonmike 12:21 PM @Marisa_C @cioccas what about reading, and *then* listening?? Or vice versa. #eltchat
worldteacher 12:21 PM @kevchanwow Wow - 2 hours seems like a really long time! #eltchat
analiakandel 12:22 PM @Marisa_C @ljp2010 Yes. Reading stations, as follow-up to reading a novel, with short texts (eg comics) related to the main theme #ELTchat
Shaunwilden 12:22 PM RT @reasons4: ‚Äú@ljp2010:  t isn't seen as valuable use of class time  #ELTchat‚Äù it is valuable in class time but for a reason. I can read at home.
reasons4 12:22 PM ‚Äú@ljp2010:  t isn't seen as valuable use of class time  #ELTchat‚Äù it is valuable in class time but for a reason. I can read at home.
Books4English 12:22 PM Newspaper for EFL Sts with teacher activities worth a try? - http://t.co/2dwY0Ngl Free 2-month trial at http://t.co/AW3V52el #eltchat
kevchanwow 12:22 PM @Shaunwilden demotivate? If they don't like the text, that demotivates.  If they can change text anytime it's OK. Breaks OK, too. #ELTchat
ljp2010 12:22 PM @Shaunwilden So engaging tasks and work on the themes, etc?  #ELTchat
hartle 12:22 PM RT @kevchanwow: @ljp2010 ?...#ELTchat gd idea. What's the teaching context?
harrisonmike 12:22 PM @hartle @Marisa_C @cioccas and the reader! E.g. Stephen Fry for Harry Potter, Tony Robinson on some Pratchett books #eltchat
cioccas 12:22 PM @worldteacher Re... a book club for EFL learners? #eltchat I talk books with my 1-to-1 learners has led to some int. discoveries for me too!
worldteacher 12:23 PM RT @emmeta78: at the beginning of the course every student buys a book from a list teacher gives, then they swap during course #eltchat
hartle 12:23 PM RT @Shaunwilden: @kevchanwow Personally I'd hate that ....class is for talking :-) #ELTchat or integrated skills?
cioccas 12:23 PM I've done some things from BritLit http://t.co/IjG8gKzv which has led to some Ss reading the whole book #ELTchat
MrChrisJWilson 12:23 PM #eltchat thought two: (how) can we use ebooks (many are free) to encourage reading? They've increased my reading.
reasons4 12:23 PM ‚Äú@Shaunwilden: @ljp2010  I think class time should be used to encourage but not necessarily do the actual reading #ELTchat‚Äù agreed
Books4English 12:23 PM RT @Shaunwilden: @ljp2010 @reasons4 I think class time should be used to encourage but not necessarily do the actual reading #ELTchat
daveclearycz 12:23 PM #eltchat so if learners are reluctant to read in class how do we motivate them to do it outside?
Marisa_C 12:24 PM @analiakandel nice - dramaizing scenes from a story or book might engage them in some reading aloud practice too  #ELTchat
daveclearycz 12:24 PM People running ER programms, how did you 'sell' it to your sts/ #eltchat
worldteacher 12:24 PM RT @MrChrisJWilson: #eltchat thought 2: (how) can we use ebooks (many are free) to encourage reading? They've increased my reading. Gd idea!
hartle 12:24 PM RT @harrisonmike: @hartle @Marisa_C @cioccas and the reader! E.g. Stephen Fry for Harry Potter... #eltchat Absolutely :-)
reasons4 12:24 PM ‚Äú@daveclearycz: #eltchat   haven't you been to my session on readers? :-)
Thomway 12:24 PM @worldteacher  Book club=yes, oft called 'literacy circles' in primary ed. Excellent motivation for YLs. Esp if u provide *popcorn* #eltchat
Shaunwilden 12:24 PM @ljp2010 Yes and the skills necessary to read independently. I used to have periods where they can ask for advice / questions #ELTchat
daveclearycz 12:25 PM RT @reasons4: ‚Äú@daveclearycz: #eltchat   haven't you been to my session on readers? :-) sadly no
daveclearycz 12:25 PM RT @reasons4: ‚Äú@daveclearycz: #eltchat   haven't you been to my session on readers? :-) sadly no
reasons4 12:25 PM ‚Äú@Marisa_C: @analiakandel might engage them in some reading aloud practice too  #ELTchat‚Äù Do students need reading aloud practice?
analiakandel 12:25 PM @Marisa_C Yes! #ELTchat
Marisa_C 12:25 PM RT @daveclearycz: People running ER programms, how did you 'sell' it to your sts/ #eltchat > Best way to consolidate ur grammar
ljp2010 12:25 PM @Shaunwilden Like.  Many reading progs assume that the sts can already do so.  While we learn to read by reading, help is good :-)  #ELTchat
kevchanwow 12:25 PM That's the issue. Students can read at home, but don't. And it's not just reading.  It's about building a community of readers. #ELTchat
Marisa_C 12:25 PM RT @daveclearycz: People running ER programms, how did you 'sell' it to your sts/ #eltchat > Best way to acquire vocab
Shaunwilden 12:25 PM RT @daveclearycz: People running ER programms, how did you 'sell' it to your sts/ #eltchat
Marisa_C 12:26 PM @reasons4 if preparing a scene for acting out why not - might lift some dialog lines and practise them  #ELTchat
reasons4 12:26 PM RT @daveclearycz: RT @reasons4: ‚Äú@daveclearycz: #eltchat   haven't you been to my session on readers? :-) sadly no
worldteacher 12:26 PM @daveclearycz I quote one of my 'success stories' - a st whose level improved dramatically through ER! #eltchat
worldteacher 12:27 PM @reasons4 Reading aloud helps with pron & intonation, as does acting out scenes fron the book. #eltchat
yya2 12:27 PM Ext. reading in class: I had lots of short articles & they read of as many as they could in 20 min, filled in a form #ELTchat
analiakandel 12:27 PM @reasons4 @Marisa_C When I did it, it was silent reading, and Ss seemed v interested. Each chose what they wished to read #ELTchat
Shaunwilden 12:27 PM @daveclearycz As way to access the wider world of English like the interweb thingy #ELTchat
reasons4 12:28 PM ‚Äú@worldteacher: @reasons4 Reading aloud helps with pron & intonation,  #eltchat‚Äù have to agree to disagree there
MrChrisJWilson 12:28 PM #eltchat (sorry for 'shouting' thoughts) what about using blogs and RSS readers to encourage reading? Reading not just fiction.
paatic 12:29 PM RT @worldteacher: @reasons4 Reading aloud helps with pron & intonation, as does acting out scenes fron the book. #eltchat
worldteacher 12:29 PM @reasons4 OK - maybe we can come back to it in a future #eltchat? :-)
reasons4 12:29 PM “@Marisa_C: @reasons4 if preparing a scene for acting out why not #ELTchat” a plethora of reasons - maybe another #eltchat
Marisa_C 12:29 PM @reasons4 we wouldn't expect any less from you :-D  #eltchat
hartle 12:29 PM RT @cioccas: I've done some things from BritLit http://t.co/s2nlCFVd which has led to some Ss reading the whole book #ELTchat > This is gr8t
Shaunwilden 12:30 PM @worldteacher @reasons4 @Marisa_C I think we did an #eltchat on reading aloud last year ;-)
kevchanwow 12:30 PM book reviews: students posting reviews of books on blogs generates interest in the texts, writing practice, and community building. #ELTchat
Marisa_C 12:30 PM @reasons4 we ve actually done that one on reading aloud - can send you link  #ELTchat #eltchat
yya2 12:31 PM @MrChrisJWilson I surveyed sts  abt their interests & provided rss news abt those topics in the class wiki for them to read. #eltchat
kevchanwow 12:31 PM Setting up a blog for your ext reading program and letting students post book reviews gives output chance and community building #ELTchat
Marisa_C 12:31 PM @kevchanwow  #ELTchat Like the idea of book review on blogs or as a wiki challenge ! Yes!
cioccas 12:31 PM RT @kevchanwow: book reviews: ... generates interest in the texts, writing practice, and community building. #ELTchat <great idea!
worldteacher 12:31 PM RT @kevchanwow: book reviews: students posting reviews of books on blogs generates interest in the texts, writing practice, and community building. #ELTchat
daveclearycz 12:31 PM @Marisa_C  @Shaunwilden @worldteacher  Thanks for the replies :-) #ELTchat
Books4English 12:31 PM Has anyone used original texts for int/upp int Ss - Dahl's KISS KISS and Orwell's ANIMAL FARM were always popular? #ELTchat
worldteacher 12:31 PM @Marisa_C  @Shaunwilden Must have missed it - will look later! #eltchat. Thanks!
Marisa_C 12:32 PM RT @Shaunwilden: As a way to engage sts @llea_dias set up a facebook group where all her sts post as characters in a book #ELTchat >Great!
Books4English 12:32 PM RT @Shaunwilden: As a way to engage sts @llea_dias set up a facebook group where all her sts post as characters in a book, i's a very neat idea #ELTchat
cioccas 12:32 PM RT @Books4English: Has anyone used original texts for int/upp int Ss... #ELTchat Yes, I'm not a great fan of graded texts myself :-)
ljp2010 12:32 PM @Books4English We use Kiss Kiss original at advanced.  Potentially dangerous to use for lower levels, can be demotivating #ELTchat
Marisa_C 12:32 PM RT @yya2: @MrChrisJWilson I surveyed sts - and what did they say? results available? #eltchat
Shaunwilden 12:32 PM As a way to engage sts @llea_dias set up a facebook group where all her sts post as characters in a book, i's a very neat idea #ELTchat
yya2 12:33 PM @Marisa_C Surveyed their interests 2 get topics 4 the rss news. They wr motivated 2 read more b/c it was abt topics they liked. #ELTchat
Marisa_C 12:33 PM RT @cioccas: RT @Books4English: Has anyone used original texts for int/upp int Ss... #ELTchat > Yes, used to write loads of stuff
Books4English 12:33 PM RT @cioccas: RT @Books4English: Has anyone used original texts for int/upp int Ss... #ELTchat Yes, I'm not a great fan of graded texts myself :-)
Books4English 12:33 PM RT @ljp2010: @Books4English We use Kiss Kiss original at advanced.  Potentially dangerous to use for lower levels, can be demotivating #ELTchat
worldteacher 12:33 PM RT @Shaunwilden: As a way to engage sts @llea_dias set up a FB group where all her sts post as characters in a book, #ELTchat >Great idea!!
Marisa_C 12:34 PM RT @Shaunwilden: @cioccas @Books4English Yes I have, Cambridge exams have set texts so we used to deal with those #ELTchat > me too
MrChrisJWilson 12:34 PM RT @kevchanwow: Setting up a blog for your ext reading program and letting students post book reviews gives output chance and community building #ELTchat
Shaunwilden 12:34 PM @cioccas @Books4English Yes I have, Cambridge exams have set texts so we used to deal with those #ELTchat
ljp2010 12:34 PM @cioccas What do you use?  Had some bad experiences with Spanish authentic texts which scared me off long authentic texts  a bit!!  #ELTchat
hartle 12:34 PM #eltchat I've got an E R page on the wiki with various ideas & tasks but not many takers :-(( http://t.co/4rPjGUri
kevchanwow 12:34 PM RT @Shaunwilden: As a way to engage sts @llea_dias set up a facebook group where all her sts post as characters in a book, i's a very neat idea #ELTchat
hartle 12:35 PM RT @ljp2010: @cioccas What do you use?   #ELTchat I've used set texts for Cambridge exams preparation, and letting stds choose own reading 2
Marisa_C 12:35 PM I must say that getting Ss to take up the set texts option ALWAYS accelerated Ss' progress - passed CPE in one yr #eltchat
kevchanwow 12:35 PM @hartle Will be hitting that wiki ERPage shortly.  Thanks for the link.  #ELTchat
Shaunwilden 12:35 PM RT @daveclearycz: but I read a lot for pleasure & never write a review, only  talk about it as  √è liked it" so is that still ER?#ELTchat
MrChrisJWilson 12:35 PM @kevchanwow or write your own short stories ;) #eltchat
worldteacher 12:36 PM RT @cioccas: @ljp2010 When I'm learning other languages, I'd rather read kids books that abridged/graded adult ones. #ELTchat >Me too!
harrisonmike 12:36 PM @Shaunwilden @daveclearycz I say yes. After all, how often do you write about reading #eltchat
hartle 12:36 PM @kevchanwow yr welcome, don't know how useful it is though #eltchat
cioccas 12:36 PM @ljp2010 When I'm learning other languages, I'd rather read kids books that abridged/graded adult ones. #ELTchat
Shaunwilden 12:36 PM @kevchanwow Arent book reviews a bit dull these days? #ELTchat Are they likely to engage teens?
ljp2010 12:37 PM @cioccas  Fair point, me too.  But graded readers have their place.  Some sts would prefer that to kids books.   #ELTchat
createch1 12:37 PM @Shaunwilden @llea_dias #ELTchat I use http://t.co/Gps3XcIk to create facebook profiles
Shaunwilden 12:37 PM @harrisonmike Personally very little apart from paid reviews for magazines :-) #ELTchat
Marisa_C 12:37 PM @Shaunwilden may be they could record their reviews an interviews - Student A = author  Student B = interviewer  #ELTchat
hartle 12:37 PM RT @Marisa_C: I must say that getting Ss to take up the set texts option ALWAYS accelerated Ss' progress #eltchat Yes, ABSOLUTELY
Shaunwilden 12:38 PM @harrisonmike @daveclearycz Though I guess if there is a class blog...#ELTchat
cioccas 12:38 PM @ljp2010 Sure, I'm talking more about my preferences as a reader here :) #ELTchat
daveclearycz 12:38 PM RT @harrisonmike:   I say yes. After all, how often do you write about reading #eltchat - dont, so why ask sts to if we want to encourage er
reasons4 12:38 PM ‚Äú@harrisonmike: @Shaunwilden @daveclearycz  how often do you write about reading #eltchat‚Äù I often send meail to familiy about books I read
hartle 12:38 PM RT @Shaunwilden: @kevchanwow Arent book reviews a bit dull these days? #ELTchat Depends on book review, try Hunger Games + videos etc
ljp2010 12:39 PM @cioccas Also important :-) It can be hard to "sell" a book to sts if ur not that keen yourself  #ELTchat
harrisonmike 12:39 PM RT @daveclearycz: RT @harrisonmike:   I say yes. After all, how often do you write about reading #eltchat - dont, so why ask sts to if we want to encourage er

harrisonmike 12:39 PM @Shaunwilden @daveclearycz create a purpose (realistic) not just for the sake of doing it #eltchat #writingaboutreading
Books4English 12:39 PM @ljp2010 Interesting to hear that Kiss Kiss is still being used! Thanks for the feedback #eltchat
Shaunwilden 12:39 PM RT @createch1: @Shaunwilden @llea_dias #ELTchat I use http://t.co/J1vXZ17M to create facebook profiles - Yes thats a good site
ljp2010 12:40 PM @Books4English Any more contemporary collections of short stories would be great too.  Suggestions?  #ELTchat
kevchanwow 12:40 PM @hartle wow.  That's an idea.  Video review of the book!  #ELTchat. Spoken practice. #ELTchat
daveclearycz 12:40 PM @harrisonmike  #eltchat  But I thought ER was just for the sake of reading, with improved language a very nice big bonus
reasons4 12:41 PM “@Shaunwilden: I think i may have mentioned this in #eltchat before you have yes :-)
Shaunwilden 12:41 PM Perhaps the ideas in it can be used with sts  #eltchat
yya2 12:41 PM When extensive reading, students can just write why they would recommend a certain article to other students in the class. #eltchat
harrisonmike 12:41 PM @daveclearycz I meant, don't do writing about reading for the sake of doing it =) #eltchat
cioccas 12:41 PM @ljp2010 Exactly! I exchange book recom'd'ns with Ss then try to source trans. versions of their faves - good cross-cultural stuff #ELTchat
Shaunwilden 12:41 PM I think i may have mentioned this in #eltchat before but have u seen mytweetsorrow project from a couple of years ago http://t.co/mmLZSFE7
cioccas 12:42 PM @Books4English @ljp2010 @Marisa_C @Shaunwilden A pleasure! Welcome to #ELTchat
reasons4 12:42 PM “@Shaunwilden: @reasons4 Well it seemed pertinent :-) #eltchat”it was :-) I was just confirming what your ailing mind vaguley recalled
Shaunwilden 12:42 PM RT @hartle: #eltchat so easy to share on Kindle etc. So ask stds to find three favourite quotes for class discussion
hartle 12:42 PM #eltchat so easy to share on Kindle etc. So ask stds to find three favourite quotes for class discussion
Marisa_C 12:42 PM @reasons4 Extensive reading is ultimately for pleasure bt I think Ts 'put paws' in it for the training part - then let go :-D  #eltchat
Shaunwilden 12:42 PM @reasons4 Well it seemed pertinent :-) #eltchat
daveclearycz 12:42 PM RT @harrisonmike: @daveclearycz I meant, don't do writing about reading for the sake of doing it =) #eltchat - then I agree :-)
harrisonmike 12:43 PM @reasons4 @daveclearycz depends on management. Set time for ER, set time for conversation/discussion, allow ER 2b 1 of the topics #eltchat
createch1 12:43 PM I asked ss to make a  film trailer based on the book #ELTchat
BobK99 12:43 PM @Shaunwilden  #eltchat Late today. Doc review overran ;( Catching up...
MrChrisJWilson 12:44 PM @hartle you can send them to twitter/fb can't you? #eltchat
yya2 12:44 PM Interesting idea: Guided independent reading: http://t.co/pmVvq4Mx #ELTchat
Shaunwilden 12:44 PM @BobK99 Very late, black mark next to your name on the register :-) #eltchat
ljp2010 12:45 PM Found this idea I want to try http://t.co/qpqFDlbE Could be a nice in class (Before/after class) low-tech approach to the reader #ELTchat
silverteacher 12:45 PM made students act some scenes from Skellig by David Almond, worked out great #ELTchat
SophiaKhan4 12:45 PM RT @kevchanwow: That's the issue. Students can read at home, but don't. And it's not just reading.  It's about building a community of readers. #ELTchat
Shaunwilden 12:46 PM @hartle Noit really reading, I'd use it to bring the reading alive rather than book reviews #eltchat
reasons4 12:46 PM ‚Äú@Marisa_C: @reasons4  #eltchat‚Äù I think teachers should put paws in but we can't have it both ways :-)
Marisa_C 12:46 PM RT @silverteacher: made students act some scenes from Skellig by David Almond, worked out great #ELTchat
hartle 12:47 PM This page http://t.co/WummISs7 has results from last year's project. Learners chose wht 2 read & presented ideas in class. #eltchat
reasons4 12:48 PM “@MrChrisJWilson: #eltchat I know a teacher who, for business 121, discussed steve jobs autobiography. Did the student read it in English?
Marisa_C 12:48 PM @reasons4 Well, ultimately we really need to question our long term objective - is it a long or a short term one? Then choose app #eltchat
MrChrisJWilson 12:48 PM #eltchat I know a teacher who, for business 121, discussed steve jobs autobiography. They talked about his business model, leadership etc.
hartle 12:48 PM RT @MrChrisJWilson: @hartle you can send them to twitter/fb can't you? #eltchat got lost :-( you cn send what?
yya2 12:49 PM Extensive reading, read as much as you can for pleasure - objective: general understanding. See: http://t.co/kZm2qb4f #eltchat
Shaunwilden 12:49 PM @hartle Well there is more to it than twtter but yes, use twitter, youtube, facebook etc #eltchat
hartle 12:49 PM RT @Shaunwilden: @hartle Noit really reading, I'd use it to bring the reading ...#eltchat so make a twitter project alongside a set text?
daveclearycz 12:50 PM RT @yya2: Extensive reading, read as much as you can for pleasure - objective: general understanding. See: http://t.co/F6EX6Doy #eltchat

silverteacher 12:51 PM also tried collaborative reading combined with class writing. Texts read by American correspondents and reviewed with Quibblo. #ELTchat

daveclearycz 12:52 PM RT @yya2: From ER http://t.co/F6EX6Doy #eltchat The purposes  are usually related to pleasure, information and general understanding.
Marisa_C 12:52 PM Some Ts - esp of advanced Ss - like to use bits for literary appreciation - then let Ss loose on rest of book - what do u think? #eltchat
Shaunwilden 12:52 PM @OUPELTGlobal Poor him :-) #eltchat
hartle 12:52 PM Gotta go now, but thnx for a very interesting discussion :-)#eltchat
OUPELTGlobal 12:52 PM @Shaunwilden Verri's in meetings all day - that's why we missed it! #eltchat
yya2 12:53 PM Extensive reading is done individually and silently. Students read materials at their own pace. #eltchat
Shaunwilden 12:53 PM @Marisa_C Sounds like a nice idea :-) #eltchat
OUPELTGlobal 12:53 PM @Shaunwilden He doesn't have it too bad ;) #eltchat
Shaunwilden 12:54 PM RT @Marisa_C: RT @cioccas: @Marisa_C Yes, that's one of the ways I use BritLit http://t.co/vgPuK27q #ELtchat
silverteacher 12:54 PM Why not make students write reviews of the school library books? collected in a binder for a long term use? #ELTchat
Marisa_C 12:54 PM RT @cioccas: @Marisa_C Yes, that's one of the ways I use BritLit http://t.co/vgPuK27q #ELtchat

cioccas 12:54 PM @Marisa_C Yes, that's one of the ways I use BritLit http://t.co/IjG8gKzv #ELtchat
Shaunwilden 12:55 PM @silverteacher Or play with the review idea, i.e. use only X number of words, choose key adjectives for it, make it a guessing game #eltchat
Marisa_C 12:55 PM If using a class library for borrowing, just a quick 1-5 star evaluation might suffice #eltchat
BobK99 12:55 PM RT @Marisa_C: Some Ts ... use bits for literary appreiation - then let Ss loose on rest of book - what do u think? #eltchat >Gd idea
Books4English 12:55 PM @cioccas @ljp2010 @Marisa_C @Shaunwilden thnks for welcome - been ELT bkselling for 38 yrs so remember a lot! Not hot on techy bits #ELTchat
yya2 12:55 PM @Marisa_C  You can bring different short novels or literary pieces to class and let student choose what they want to read. #eltchat

kevchanwow 12:56 PM @yya2 @Marisa_C the more you bring to class the better I think.  Even stuff way beyond students level.  Just to try has value.  #ELTchat

yya2 12:58 PM @worldteacher  Yes! The more the better, students can be challenged with material a little beyond their level. #eltchat
kevchanwow 12:58 PM If environment is safe and Ss know they can put a book back anytime, there is no way to fail.  They are empowered to try any text #ELTchat
Shaunwilden 12:58 PM @Marisa_C Haha I dunno ask Dave, I was just adding the hashtag  #eltchat
worldteacher 12:58 PM @Shaunwilden Count how many sts want to do it again?! #eltchat
